Prep/Foundation

Our Prep children are given the best possible start to school life by being introduced to learning through a rich assortment of opportunities and experiences. The Prep literacy program focuses on developing skills in listening, speaking, writing and reading while discovering print and its variety of uses. The numeracy program provides active participation in practical experiences to count, sort, classify, group, measure, weigh, add and solve problems.

Students participate in weekly Discovery Learning sessions. These are targeted play based learning sessions which enable students to investigate, consolidate and expand on areas of learning from that week’s curriculum focus. The Prep teachers plan a range of learning stations for students to investigate in 20 minute intervals. These stations are based on fine motor development, science knowledge, construction, craft, dramatic play, board games, literacy and numeracy.

Prep students have access to a class set of iPads in the classroom. These are used during literacy and numeracy sessions to increase student knowledge, participation and engagement. Screen time is thoughtfully monitored; our curriculum programs are intentionally planned to make the most of screen time at school. In a typical week, the iPad technology may only be used for one 30 minute session.

It is refreshing that fathers are just as welcome as mothers in school life. From Kindergarten where I have the opportunity to participate in my youngest boy’s class to school camp that I was fortunate to attend, I have always been encouraged and warmly welcomed. I have also thoroughly enjoyed participating in class room help for all my boys.

The move into the grade 5/6 area which is separate from the rest of the school gives the kids a real sense of being the ‘big kids’ and is a start to their transition to secondary school and being more responsible.

The school garden is such a fantastic feature of our school. Garden Club students have the opportunity to learn about all aspects of gardening from the role of healthy soil to how to use silverbeet to make delicious pizzas. Science, nutrition and sustainability are explored in a truly hands on environment.

We run a progressive and innovative technology program to produce true 21st Century Citizens. Students in Prep enjoy using iPads and students in the senior school will be instructed with Ultrabooks as a part of our 1-to-1 program.
