About Us

About our kindergarten

Box Hill North Kindergarten was the first kindergarten located on a school site in Victoria. The original kindergarten was created by the school community as they banded together in 1995 to build the kindergarten themselves, using some vacant school classrooms and developing an outdoor play space. The kindergarten was then officially opened onsite the following year in 1996. 

The kindergarten then underwent major renovations in 2013. The newly refurbished and renovated facilities now feature two light and bright rooms, with the entrance central to the main school thoroughfare. The kindergarten classrooms provide ample space for the children to explore and extend their curiosity for learning, and flow through to the spacious and interactive outdoor environment.

At the beginning of 2022, we commenced building works on a new junior learning hub to further connect the kindergarten to our primary school. This is a space for families to connect and share their own journey, as well as providing the children with a glimpse of what school looks like in their future. We cannot wait to share with you this space soon. Stay tuned!

We have drawn our inspiration from the Reggio Emilia Approach, where the environment is held as the third teacher.  This is where the learning environment is set out to promote learning, be aesthetically pleasing, and provokes children’s curiosity to further develop creativity, imagination, engage in meaningful learning and have a strong self-identity.

 The outdoor learning environment provides opportunities for our children to extend their gross motor skills, participate in imaginative play and begin to engage in sustainable practices, and care for the world around us.  By promoting a sustainable future, our children continue to learn and develop ways in which our actions impact the world around us.  We believe that both the indoor and outdoor learning spaces play an important role in children learning about the world around them.  

Within our programs we empowering the children to grow, face challenges, celebrate achievements, work independently, build resilience and express themselves in many ways.  We teach them about friendship, kindness, respect and how to express their emotions in socially acceptable ways.  We aim for our classrooms to be a space for each child to feel free to be themselves and explore their curiosity through open-ended learning and play. 

 We value our connections with families, and have long-lasting connections with past families who have attended our kindergarten. Our door is always open and we encourage all families to feel welcome to come and join in our learning.   We encourage family feedback and input into our curriculum and to be actively involved in all aspect of our programs. We highly value the links between home, kindergarten, school and the wider community, continuously working on ways to work in partnership with all groups to provide the best start for each child.

 At Box Hill North Primary Kindergarten, we celebrate diversity and difference in people, celebrating and recognising the unique set of beliefs that every child brings with them into our Kindergarten. We respect all cultural traditions and include these in our program where ever possible.  We encourage participation of children with additional needs in our programs, creating a warm, supportive and happy space, teaching children to be accepting of everyone.   Kindness, respect and curiosity are three values in which we uphold throughout our daily learning practices and routines to ensure each child develops ways of becoming a kind, respectful and proactive member of society.

 We know first impressions are hugely important when choosing a kindergarten and once you step inside our facilities, we know that you will feel at home.   It is here where your children will begin their journey, extending their sense of curiosity through play-based learning experiences in line with the infamous Reggio Emilia approach.
